Special Announcement

The Association's Council is excited to announce that the voting Chair members recently approved Bylaws changes that include renaming the organization to the Association for Academic Pathology, using the acronym AAPath. This issue was discussed at length by APC Council and Section Chairs, since last July, before the Bylaws changes were brought to a vote. Renaming the organization is a major step that was driven by these goals:

• to better represent who we are and what we do;
• to encourage broader membership and member engagement;
• to eliminate barriers to participation by aspiring and emerging leaders in academic pathology; and
• to attract more external partners for program development and advocacy.

The renaming follows an expansion of regular membership to be less focused on allopathic medical school designation and more inclusive of all academic-based contributions to education, research and practice. As with APC, the mission of AAPath is still to represent and promote excellence in academic pathology and laboratory medicine by providing education, training, information resources and networking opportunities for department leaders, faculty and staff. The overarching name change will not affect the organizational structure, name or leadership of any existing Sections, Committees or Groups, nor the Society of ’67 or the Academy of Distinguished Pathology Educators. 

Over the coming weeks, you will gradually see and receive notifications of changes to the website and email/e-list addresses. This transition will culminate in a renaming celebration at the 57^th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC on July 21-24, 2024.  We hope you join us in welcoming this momentous step in the history of APC!

 About the AAPath

The Association for Academic Pathology (AAPath), formerly the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC), is a non-profit society which serves as the voice of academic departments of Pathology in the U.S. and Canada. AAPath exists to provide leadership and advocacy for the dynamic discipline of Pathology, and to enable academic departments to meet the demands of their three missions: medical education, research, and practice.

The AAPath provides education, training, information resources, and networking opportunities for members of the five membership sections. Those sections are:

• Chairs - Departmental Chairs, Vice Chairs, and Senior Fellows
• PRODS - Residency Program Directors and Associate Residency Program Directors
• UMEDS - Directors of Undergraduate Medical Education (medical school)
• APEX - Academic Pathology Executives Section
• GMEAS - Residency and Fellowship Program Coordinators
