Washington, DC, is the location where APC held its very first Annual Meeting in 1967. Of course, the nation's capital is full of historic, cultural, and natural sites to visit. Here are a few great starting points:

• Official DC tourism site
• TripAdvisor
• The museums of the Smithsonian Institution, including the National Zoo, are all free admission, and visitors can walk in to most facilities without tickets.
• One notable exception to the Smithsonian's protocol is the recently opened African American History and Culture Museum. Entry is free, but timed passes are required.
• The National Zoo (free admission) is only a half-mile walk (north/uphill via Connecticut Avenue) from the meeting site. The National Zoo is one of only four zoos in the U.S. housing giant pandas. 

When to Arrive

Pathology Leadership Academy (PLA) attendees and speakers should plan to arrive on Sunday, July 23^rd, for programming that begins at 8:30 am on Monday, July 24^th. Note: Separate application and registration for limited seating is required to attend the PLA.

Annual Meeting attendees who are NOT attending the PLA should plan to arrive in time for pre-meeting events of choice on Tuesday, July 25^th.
The following pre-meeting events are planned:

• New Chairs' Boot Camp begins at 8:30 am;
• Exhibits open at 8:30 am and "Celebrate Exhibitors" lunch is available to all attendees from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Exhibit Hall;
• UMEDS Workshop begins at 1:00 pm;
• GMEAS Workshop begins at 1:00 pm;
• Joint Chairs/PRODS/PDAS Advocacy Primer on Population Health begins at 1:30 pm.

The opening reception begins at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, July 25^th. Formal programming concludes at varied times (by 12:00 noon) on Friday, July 28^th. Please check your section’s draft program for the latest details.

Transportation

• By Air: The DC metro region is served by multiple airports:
• Washington National Airport (DCA) - Metrorail, SuperShuttle, or taxi
• Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) - SuperShuttle or taxi
• Dulles International Airport (IAD) - SuperShuttle or taxi
• By Rail: Amtrak trains arrive in DC via Union Station; the Metro's Red Line can be accessed without leaving the building. Union Station is only a short walk away from the U.S. Capitol.
• By Road: Google Maps

Within DC

• Rail and bus service is operated by WMATA ("Metro"). 
• The hotel is only a two-minute walk from the Woodley Park-Zoo Metro Station (Red Line). This stop can be reached from the metro stations at Union Station (Red Line: 6 stops away) and DCA (Yellow Line: transfer to Red Line at Gallery Place-Chinatown).
• The 96, L1, and L2 bus lines all stop within one block of the hotel.
• To plan a route on public transit, use the WMATA Trip Planner or the Transit option on the navigation app of your choice.
• WMATA rules and etiquette: Walk left/stand right, and other important tips.
• Several taxicab companies operate in the DC area, and taxi stands are available at all airports, Union Station, and the OMNI Shoreham Hotel. While visiting DC, you can usually hail a cab within a few minutes on any busy street or avenue.
• Many locals choose to use apps like Lyft to call a car to their current location, rather than seeking out a cab.
