We're celebrating the upcoming new year by highlighting a few of APC's many activities and achievements in 2018.
 

JANUARY

  • APC President Tristram Parslow, MD, PhD (Emory University), and Donald Karcher, MD (George Washington University), deliver the inaugural “State of the APC: Presidential Address” webinar. apcprods.org/m-webinars
  • Preparations for APC 2018 kick into high gear!
    • The abstract submissions period closes and the review process begins. Over forty abstracts were submitted! All accepted abstracts were later published in Academic Pathology. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/2374289518788096
    • Following the success of the 2017 Society of ’67 Scholars Program, applications open for the next cohort of Society of ’67 Scholars. apcprods.org/m-s67-scholars

FEBRUARY

  • Lydia P. Howell, MD (University of California, Davis), is elected to serve as APC's next President-Elect (2018-2020; President, 2020-2022). Your Council members for AY 2018-2019 (as well as past Council members, as far back as 2002) are listed online at apcprods.org/m-apc-council.
  • Academic Pathology starts tweeting. Follow @AcadPathol (twitter.com/AcadPathol) for article highlights and journal news. While you're checking your Twitter feed: are you following @apcprods (twitter.com/apcprods) as well?

MARCH

  • APC releases the spring edition of our biannual newsletter, Paths to Progress. Past editions of Paths to Progress are archived online at apcprods.org/m-paths-to-progress.
  • Chairs & PRODS meet in Vancouver during USCAP 2018. Chairs have a business lunch meeting, while the PRODS program includes plenary talks on preparing and mentoring residents, and presentations of selected educational abstracts submitted by residents.
  • Academic Pathology publishes “The Continuing Fellowship Conundrum” (journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2374289518763810). In this commentary, the authors, who are members of APC's Fellowship Directors ad hoc Committee (FDAHC), tackle the subject of the fellowship application process for pathology subspecialties.

APRIL

  • Academic Pathology publishes “Outsourcing of Academic Clinical Laboratories: Experiences and lessons from the APC laboratory outsourcing survey” (journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2374289518765435). The authors (Drs. Kragel, Mrak, and Tomaszewski) base their findings on a survey of APC members.
  • APC's Leaders Learning Series (apcprods.org/m-webinars) presents: “Learning from Quality: A Pathology Department's Success.” In this webinar, Jody E. Hooper, MD (Johns Hopkins University), outlines the quality structure of JHU and describes successful projects.

MAY

  • Based on feedback from APC and PDAS members, the Practice & Management Committee administers an abbreviated (CP-only) version of its practice survey for 2018. A more comprehensive annual practice survey will be administered in 2019. Data from previous practice surveys were reported in two earlier Academic Pathology articles.
  • APC's Leaders Learning Series (apcprods.org/m-webinars) presents: “Expanding Pathology Services to the Public Health Arena by Working with State Government Agencies,” featuring Chen Liu, MD, PhD (Rutgers University NJMS & RWJMS). Dr. Liu presents a partnership model between the Department of Pathology at Rutgers University and the Public Health and Environmental Laboratories (PHEL), an agency of the New Jersey State Department of Health.

JUNE

  • The Joint PhD Data Task Force releases two important resources based on its work over the last five years.
    • Academic Pathology publishes the Task Force's article, “The Pathology Workforce and Clinical Licensure: The role of the PhD clinical laboratorian in the United States.” journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2374289518775948
    • APC's Leaders Learning Series (apcprods.org/m-webinars) presents: “Pathology Workforce: The Role of the PhD Clinical Laboratorian” with Robin G. Lorenz, MD, PhD (Co-Chair, Joint PhD Data Task Force). This webinar includes highlights from the Task Force's Academic Pathology article, which features compiled data from multiple organizations.
  • The Society of ’67 launches the Open Access Award, which covers the article processing fee for one Academic Pathology manuscript. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; details at apcprods.org/m-s67-oa.

JULY

  • The 51st Annual Meeting of the Association of Pathology Chairs takes place at the Hotel del Coronado, near San Diego, CA, with nearly 470 registrants! Meeting details are archived online at apcprods.org/meetings-2018.
  • Thanks to the Society of ’67's inaugural silent auction and FUNraiser events, the society raises a total of $12,600 during APC's annual meeting. Learn more about the Society of ’67, including its mission, programs, and donors, at apcprods.org/m-societyof67.

AUGUST

  • Following two years of research and deliberation, APC's Autopsy Working Group publishes its results in Academic Pathology: “Report and Recommendations of the Association of Pathology Chairs' Autopsy Working Group.” journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2374289518793988
  • Academic Pathology publishes an additional eight PCME Educational Cases—the highest count for a single month. The PCME (Pathology Competencies for Medical Education) “portal” can be found at journals.sagepub.com/page/apc/pcme.

SEPTEMBER

  • APC launches our new monthly email updates, APC E-News. See all E-News messages to date at apc.memberclicks.net/index.php?option=com_dailyplanetblog&category=e-news
  • “What Advice Current Pathology Chairs Seek from Former Chairs” (journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2374289518807397), the latest manuscript in a series of Senior Fellows Group (SFG)-focused articles authored by SFG leadership, is accepted for publication by Academic Pathology. This article is the result of a panel discussion at APC 2018.
  • The Intersociety Pathology Council (IPC), which serves as a communication center and provides a unified voice for the discipline of pathology, names APC as its new Secretariat. IPC management will transition to APC from the current Secretariat, Intersociety Council of Pathology Information (ICPI).

OCTOBER

  • New program launch: APC Online Learning! Those enrolled in Online Learning (apcprods.org/online-learning) gain unlimited access to 13 hours of on-demand, CME-eligible recordings from APC 2018! For those who did not attend APC 2018, or missed some of the speakers, the Online Learning content serves as a valuable resource of new information. For meeting attendees, this content serves as a refresher and as reference material.
  • APC publishes the fall edition of our biannual newsletter, Paths to Progress. apcprods.org/m-paths-to-progress

NOVEMBER

  • In the month of November, Academic Pathology articles were downloaded over 4,000 times! This is the greatest number of downloads per month in the journal's history. Our year-to-date downloads for 2018 are on track to be at least 8,000 higher than in 2017. 
    Academic Pathology, the official publication of the APC, is 100% open access. View all content from our indexed journal, free of charge, at journals.sagepub.com/home/apc.
  • APC promotes pathology at AAMC 2018. apcprods.org/m-satellite-meetings
    • At the Minority Student Medical Career Fair, APC representatives explain pathology and encourage students to explore pathology opportunities. apcprods.org/opportunities
    • In the exhibit hall, APC highlights the PCME, Academic Pathology, and Society of ’67 programs.
    • APC leadership meet with representatives from new medical schools to discuss the challenges and opportunities in integrating pathology education into new models of medical school curricula.
  • On Giving Tuesday 2018, the Society ’67 raises $11,100. Thank you to all the contributors who made this Giving Tuesday a success!

DECEMBER

  • The Society of ’67 announces the inaugural recipients of the Pathology Trainee Project Grants in Healthcare Innovation (apcprods.org/m-s67-grants). Congratulations to Drs. Christopher Hergott, Nicole Landry LePage, and Ann Shepler; Ms. Vivian Tang; and Ms. Ann Tooley!
