The Association for Academic Pathology's Senior Fellow member category was established in 1993, for former Chair members who have played important roles in AAPath, and who wish to maintain active membership beyond their terms as Pathology Chairs. Senior Fellows bring decades of past experience to AAPath, and their input is highly valued by the association, current and aspiring Pathology Chairs, and the larger academic Pathology community. To learn more about the formation of the Senior Fellows group, and other important association milestones, see the history of AAPath.
At the July 2017 AAPath/Chairs business meeting, the Senior Fellows Group (SFG) was officially accepted as a member group of AAPath, after several years as an ad hoc committee. The SFG is comprised of all Senior Fellow members of AAPath. Per AAPath's bylaws, Senior Fellows are non-voting members of AAPath. The SFG membership consists of former academic department of pathology chairs who have been approved for membership according to the SFG Operating Procedures.
Purpose
The Senior Fellows Group (SFG) has been established to assist the AAPath in its activities and mission by:
participating in AAPath programs, committees, and projects; and
providing advice, consultation, and mentoring to current Chairs and other members of the AAPath, and to other Pathology Department faculty interested in leadership roles.
SFG Resources
SFG Leadership The inaugural officers of the SFG Executive Committee were elected in August of 2017. The regular election cycle began in spring 2018 and will occur annually each spring.
SFG Advisers (Consult List) The major goal of the Senior Fellows is to assist current Chairs and other members of the AAPath, including Pathology Department faculty interested in leadership roles, by providing advice, consultation, and mentoring based on their experience. To find Senior Fellows' areas of interest for providing advice, expertise as a potential speaker, past Chair experience, and contact information, view the Senior Fellows Consult List. Please note: the Consult List is only available to current members of AAPath (i.e. Chairs and Vice Chairs). Login is required in order to view details on the Senior Fellows involved in consultation.
SFG Membership
The Senior Fellows Group (SFG) is an integral part of the Association for Academic Pathology (AAPath). It was formally established in 2017 to provide an opportunity for AAPath members who have stepped away from Chair positions to remain actively engaged with the AAPath, its members, and its missions in academic Pathology. We welcome membership applications from those who have served as full-time Chairs of Pathology and/or Laboratory Medicine departments in academic institutions, particularly those with records of substantive personal and departmental participation in the AAPath. Those who have served as Acting or Interim Chairs with at least 5 years of service in aggregate are also invited to apply. To apply, please complete the online application below for review by the SFG Executive Committee. For questions, contact the Chair of the SFG Executive Committee, David N. Bailey, at [email protected].
Eligibility Individuals who have been either Chair members (for any length of time) or Interim Chair members (for at least five continuous or total years) and who are in good standing may, upon application, be recommended by the SFG Executive Committee for approval by the AAPath Council as SFG members. If an SFG member subsequently assumes a Chair, they will lose their status as a Senior Fellow at the time they become Chair.
Applying for Membership Former academic Pathology Department Chairs and Interim Chairs who meet the qualifications outlined above may make formal application for SFG membership. To apply for membership in the Senior Fellows Group, please complete the onlineSenior Fellows Application Form. Applications are reviewed according to the SFG Operating Procedures. If you are unable to complete the online application, please contact info@academicpathology.org.
Membership Terms and Requirements SFG members will have an indefinite term of membership unless or until the member either withdraws or is recommended for termination for cause by vote of two-thirds of the SFG Executive Committee. Terminations must be approved by the AAPath Council. Every two years, SFG members will be required to submit a disclosure of any fiduciary relationship with outside organizations that may constitute a real or perceived conflict of interest with the AAPath or any of its constituent entities. At the time of solicitation of this disclosure, the SFG member will be asked to indicate whether or not they wish to continue membership in the SFG. If they indicate that they wish membership to continue, it will be continued. If they indicate that they do not wish to continue membership, it will be discontinued. Failure to submit the disclosure form every two years may be grounds for termination of membership for cause.
Current Members A list of all SFG Members is included below. Biographical entries are linked for each member if provided. To update your listing, please contact the AAPath Office at info@academicpathology.org.
