** ANNOUNCING PIER RELEASE 4 **
The PIER curriculum has been updated and streamlined to make implementation easier for pathology residency programs. Major improvements include: a shorter guide to help programs get started, updated topics and all new knowledge and skill statements to better match knowledge and skill expectations for residents upon completion of training, a new tool replacing three previous tools to more easily track resident progress and record completion, transitioned the Resource Toolkit (85 pages) into 4 separate, smaller documents; one for each of the Essentials, restructured the Resource Toolkits to improve ease of use, and reduced the number of Recommended Resources for each topic to make it easier to select teaching tools.
About PIER
PIER Curriculum
What is PIER?
PIER is a research-based instructional resource developed by the Association for Academic Pathology, Association for Pathology Informatics, and College of American Pathologists that presents training topics, implementation strategies and resource options for PRODS and faculty to effectively provide informatics training to their residents and meet ACGME informatics milestone requirements. For further information, see PIER At-A-Glance.
New - Recommended Resource for the PIER Curriculum
The College of American Pathologists has agreed to make a book chapter from the second edition of their publication, “Laboratory Administration for Pathologists” available as a free teaching resource to support pathology residency education in informatics. This chapter, authored by James H. Harrison Jr, MD, PhD, FCAP, is titled, “Management of Pathology Information Systems” and explains many key topics and concepts that are covered in the PIER Essentials.
This book chapter and its content may be shared to support pathology residency informatics education. Use in conjunction with the PIER curriculum is recommended but not required. Please make note of the following terms of use: 1) any references to content in this book chapter must include the appropriate attribution, 2) this book chapter and its content may not be used for commercial purposes, and 3) if modified, the modified material may not be distributed.
