STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

APC Hosted its First Virtual Open House for Medical Students
On June 12th, nearly 200 medical students joined APC trainee hosts and other pathologist representatives at APC’s Virtual Open House to learn about the pathology specialty and pathologist training. The pilot program kicked-off with asking attendees their perceptions of pathologists and pathology, and their responses, captured in the word cloud below, offered encouraging insight:

How would you describe a Pathologist?

Presentations included:

  • the training pathway to become a pathologist
  • defining anatomic pathology and clinical pathology
  • outlining the research track in pathology for MD/PhD trainees
  • sharing testimonials on how the APC trainees discovered pathology
  • learning from two case scenarios that touched on AP, CP, research, and public health aspects
  • small group breakout discussions with the trainees and representatives from ASCP, CAP, and NAME.

Thank you to the resident/trainee leaders who developed and presented the program in APC’s pipeline outreach efforts, as well as the representatives from other pathology organizations who have free resources/memberships for medical students!

View, download, and share compiled lists of resources related to pathology, careers, organizations, and academic pathologists -- especially for medical students, including materials from the APC Virtual Open House.

APC provides a dynamic list of opportunities for students interested in pathology who are at varying points in their academic careers. This list is based on voluntary submissions from our departmental members at medical schools across the nation. Add your pathology opportunities today! Visit: https://www.apcprods.org/opportunities

ACADEMIC PATHOLOGY UPDATES

The COVID-19 Special Collection in Academic Pathology, APC’s official, open-access journal, illustrates how academic departments met the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic by adjusting nearly every aspect of their operations. These articles were submitted between September and December 2020, reflecting experiences within the first 10 months of the outbreak. The importance of the lab to healthcare has never been more apparent. Sharing these innovations and best practices is a valuable step, one from which we can all learn. Moreover, with this collection, the Editors hoped to showcase the stunning advances and adaptations made by departments of academic pathology in order to serve the Public Good.

Read the introductory editorial from Collection Editor, Karen L. Kaul, MD, PhD, Deputy Editor, Academic Pathology, included below:
