UPDATE ON APC'S BYLAWS AND ELECTIONS

Voting Chair Membership Approves Amendments to APC’s Bylaws
The APC Council and voting Chair membership recently amended the APC Bylaws. To summarize, the proposed amendments address the following issues:

  1. Modifying departmental membership criteria to be independent of LCME accreditation as the basis of regular membership and to be open to recognizing more departments with relevant leadership experience (for example, departments of basic science or diagnostic medicine);
  2. Establishing a Membership Committee to implement the new membership criteria and support the continuous review of membership status and membership outreach;
  3. Reducing the term of the President-Elect, President, and Past President from two years to one year each to increase the potential for more candidates to serve APC Council in these leadership roles;
  4. Clarifying that committee vice chairs must meet the eligibility requirements of committee chairs (to succeed them, when needed);
  5. Expanding Senior Fellow membership to include interim chairs who have served five or more consecutive years.

Click here to view the updated Bylaws, or visit the APC website at: https://www.apcprods.org/apc.

2022 APC Officer Election Outcomes
The APC Nominating Committee, chaired by Past President Barbara Ducatman, MD, recently facilitated elections for two open APC Council Officer Positions: President-Elect and Secretary-Treasurer. Congratulations to the winning candidates:

President-Elect: Michael Laposata, MD, PhD, University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston
Secretary-Treasurer (2022-2025): Jennifer Baccon, MD, PhD, Northeast Ohio Medical University

The Nominating Committee is very grateful to Chen Liu MD, PhD, and Jennifer Hunt, MD for their willingness to stand for election and for the amazing work they continue to do in service to APC as Practice & Management Committee Chair and Pathology Leadership Academy organizer, respectively. The Nominating Committee and APC Council also thanks David Roth, MD, PhD, whose term ends in July, for his six years of outstanding service as Secretary-Treasurer!

APC is fortunate to have diverse, talented and thoughtful volunteer leadership.  APC Council encourages all Chair members to consider pathways to Council election by serving on APC committees. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact [email protected].

ADVOCACY ACTIONS

APC Joins ACE in Supporting Free and Open Academic Discourse
As a member of the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM, APC was invited by the American Council on Education (ACE) to join nearly 100 organizations in higher learning to address growing concerns that states prohibiting content in schools undermines basic academic principles and civil society. As stated in a joint, open letter, free and open inquiry and debate on campuses is essential to our democracy and national wellbeing. The letter urges government to maintain support for the exchange of ideas and respectful discourse, which are core academic and democratic values.

APC Continues to Advocate for Solutions to LDT Oversight
APC is pleased to further our cooperation with the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and other major stakeholders to ensure that legislation regulating laboratory developed tests (LDTs) is uncoupled from an unrelated reauthorization bill that must pass in the next several months. In partnership, AACC, ACMG, AMP, and APC drafted a letter asking Congress to consider the FDA-led regulatory process over LDTs (VALID Act) separately from the FDA and industry-negotiated agreement on medical device user fees (MDUFA) to allow more time for stakeholders to come to consensus on the complex and potentially detrimental effects of FDA regulation of LDTs as set forth in the current version of VALID. As noted in prior communications, APC recognizes there are an array of positions and perspectives about the FDA’s role in regulating various forms of testing – from patient groups, fellow physicians, manufacturers, and even among pathology groups. One thing almost every stakeholder can agree upon is that the current version of the VALID Act needs work. APC is grateful to the member institutions that signed on to the letter to show their support.

2022 Advocacy Priorities
In cooperation with APC’s Advocacy Committee, which consists of representatives from the Graduate Medical Education, Practice & Management, Research, and Undergraduate Medical Education Committees, APC Council recently issued their 2022 Advocacy Priorities.
