Important Updates from the AAPath

APC IS NOW AAPath
Special Announcement

APC Logo AAPath Logo

The Association's Council is excited to announce that the voting Chair members recently approved Bylaws changes that include renaming the organization to the Association for Academic Pathology, using the acronym AAPath. This issue was discussed at length by APC Council and Section Chairs, since last July, before the Bylaws changes were brought to a vote. Renaming the organization is a major step that was driven by these goals:

  • to better represent who we are and what we do;
  • to encourage broader membership and member engagement;
  • to eliminate barriers to participation by aspiring and emerging leaders in academic pathology; and
  • to attract more external partners for program development and advocacy.

The renaming follows an expansion of regular membership to be less focused on allopathic medical school designation and more inclusive of all academic-based contributions to education, research and practice. As with APC, the mission of AAPath is still to represent and promote excellence in academic pathology and laboratory medicine by providing education, training, information resources and networking opportunities for department leaders, faculty and staff. The overarching name change will not affect the organizational structure, name or leadership of any existing Sections, Committees or Groups, nor the Society of ’67 or the Academy of Distinguished Pathology Educators.

Over the coming weeks, you will gradually see and receive notifications of changes to the website and email/e-list addresses. This transition will culminate in a renaming celebration at the 57th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC on July 21-24, 2024.  We hope you join us in welcoming this momentous step in the history of APC!

NEW COMPENSATION BENCHMARK DATA AVAILABLE

The preliminary 2023 Academic Pathology Faculty and Administrators Compensation Benchmarking data is now available to participating departments; final data will be released in early June. Starting with 2022 data collected last year, these annual compensation studies by AAPath are designed to confidentially collect data and transform into a member-interrogated reporting system, when the collection period is closed.

Rather than reporting data once as a static presentation at annual meetings or other venues, benchmarking data is now available to eligible participating departments throughout the year and anonymized results are sortable by a variety of self-selected metrics. AAPath expects this survey platform to provide true added value to members as you seek useful comparative regional and national data to assist in recruitment, retention, and discussions with institutional leadership.

Access instructions to the online survey site are provided to Chairs and APEX members. For more information, visit www.apcprods.org/benchmarking.

AAPath ADVOCACY ACTIONS UPDATE
From the desk of AAPath's Deputy Director,
Lydia P. Howell, MD

Advocacy takes many forms within AAPath – we advocate with government to promote the unique views of academic pathology in order to shape national policy and regulations, and we participate in public discourse to influence public opinion and shape change via the influence of others. In the past month, we continued our efforts to influence change in many areas that are important to delivering the missions of academic pathology. Here are some highlights:

FDA regulation of lab-developed tests (LDTs):  The FDA’s Final Rule was issued last month and now requires LDTs to be regulated like medical devices. AAPath will be monitoring activities related to a recent lawsuit filed by ACLA against the FDA, challenging their authority to regulate professional laboratory testing services as medical devices under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act (FDCA).

Meanwhile, AAPath is implementing a planned, two-pronged approach to addressing the Final Rule:

  • AAPath is participating in a formal request to initiate processes in the Congressional Review Act (CRA), a tool that can be used by Congress to overturn a rule issued by a federal agency. Our partners at the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP), in collaboration with Innovation Policy Solutions, LLC, have organized this CRA support effort. AAPath and other participating laboratory organizations question the FDA’s authority, given that laboratory practices and quality programs are overseen via the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. There are also substantial concerns that the new rule will negatively impact patient care and innovation due to the administrative burden to implement the requirements. We therefore encourage you to work with your institution’s government relations offices and complete this form to add your institution’s name in support of the CRA resolution.
  • AAPath will soon be rolling out a webinar series to guide our members’ laboratories in meeting the requirements of the FDA’s final rule. Though we oppose the rule, we recognize that this rule is now a requirement and compliance is expected in accordance with the timeline provided by the FDA. AAPath is here to help our members meet these new requirements, an especially important role since a substantial percentage of respondents to our survey last fall indicated a high degree of unfamiliarity with FDA approval processes and few resources for implementation. The first webinar will take place on June 20th at 1:00 pm Eastern and will feature Heather Pierce, Acting Chief Scientific Officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges. Future webinars will include AAPath members who will share their experience, tips and pitfalls in seeking FDA approval for LDTs. Stay tuned for more details!

Supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion:

  • AAPath has submitted a letter to Representative Virginia Foxx encouraging opposition to the Embracing Anti-Discrimination, Unbiased Curriculum and Advancing Truth in Education (EDUCATE) Act:  This act (House Resolution 7725), prevents medical schools from receiving Federal funds if they adopt policies and requirements relating to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). In our letter, we share that cultivating a diverse workforce to join our specialty is critical to addressing the current national shortage of pathologists and laboratory professionals, and can improve patient care, communication and financial performance in health systems. The bill has 43 co-sponsors, as of May 12, 2024, and amends the Higher Education Act of 1965. You can read AAPath’s full letter opposing this act on the AAPath Statements page.
  • Influencing public opinion on DEI:  As mentioned above, advocacy is not just about working to change government – it is also about influencing public opinion and societal change. Members of the Leadership Development & Diversity Committee and other AAPath stakeholders are drafting a diversity statement and web page to publicly share our commitment to developing and supporting a diverse community of colleagues from all parts of academic pathology, so that our work in all of our academic missions can best serve the people of their region and the world. We are also preparing an historical article describing AAPath’s remarkable journey in diversity, equity and inclusion, and our leadership in developing the academic pathology workforce our nation needs to ensure excellent patient-centered pathology and laboratory services, education, and research that serves all people.

As the academic year approaches a close, we hope that AAPath’s advocacy efforts help set the stage for an even better new year to come.  Thanks for your participation and support!

Educational Cases

Academic Pathology now has over 170 Educational Cases published in association with the Pathology Competencies for Medical Education (PCME), which are organized as collections in three competency areas – disease mechanisms and processes, organ system pathology, and diagnostic medicine and therapeutic pathology. The PCME were created by pathology chairs and course directors to serve as a national standard identifying the core content for teaching pathology in these basic competencies. Each competency includes learning goals and objectives to assess the acquisition, integration and application of knowledge to demonstrate the development of competency. Click here to learn more about how to prepare an Educational Case and see an index of cases that are ready to use in medical education.
