CORPORATE WORKSHOPS

Like Exhibits, these Corporate Workshops were free and accessible for both registered attendees and members of APC!

National Board of Medical Examiners: Medical School Services for Pathology Faculty (C12CW.01)

  • Marie Maranki, Product Manager for Subject Exams, and Daniel Friedberg, Product Manager for Customized Assessments
  • The purpose of this session is to take an in-depth look at: (1) NBME’s Pathology Basic Science subject examination, a 125-item multiple choice pre-built fixed form exam which provides national normative data that reflects the performance of examinees from medical schools accredited by LCME; and (2) Customized Assessment Services (CAS) enables medical school faculty to build high-quality exams tailored to an institution’s curriculum using NBME’s validated test questions. In addition, the current blueprint for the Pathology Basic Science subject examination will be reviewed, as well as a robust discussion of ways to better align this exam with Pathology curriculum. In the discussion portion of the session, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, and inform the future direction of these products to better serve medical educators in Pathology.

Inspirata: Using Technology to Save Cost and Increase Revenue in Challenging Times (C12CW.02)

  • Mark Lloyd, PhD, MSM, Executive Vice President and Founder
  • This is not a time of status quo. And we need to adapt to survive. We continue to grapple with the challenges of the COVID-19 world and how to best lead our departments during this crisis. Many are wrestling with operational stresses while our financial pressures are mounting. We analyzed data from our own recent global survey, from published literature and by interviewing hospital leadership, pathology chairs and laboratory directors. We have observed several financial challenges as well as a few opportunities. This workshop will describe how you can reduce specimen transport costs and load balance cases amongst distributed pathology groups. We will present evidence for remote working for frozen section, consensus conference, tumor board and primary diagnosis. We will demonstrate how technology can virtualize our faculty and extend our network of pathologists to meet the demand of the backlog of elective cases that are now beginning to fill our surgical centers. While technology facilitates these efficiencies, we recognize the need for a creative financial model, closely tied to revenue, that will make these solutions a ‘must have’ for our departments’ bottom line.

Foundation Medicine: Comprehensive Genomic Profiling of Cancer Tissues vs Blood: Are they competitive or complimentary? (C12CW.03)

  • Registration/resource link coming soon!
  • Jeffrey S. Ross, MD, Jones-Rohner Professor of Pathology and Urology, Upstate Medical University
  • This workshop will contrast and compare the use of FFPE tissues obtained from surgical pathology biopsies and resections with the use of blood samples to obtain circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) for the comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) of DNA and RNA made available for the management of patients with clinically advanced solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Competing platforms for tissue and blood genomic sequencing will be presented including their strengths and weaknesses. The clinical settings where CGP has been most productive in guiding both targeted and immunotherapy treatment decisions will be contrasted with settings where this approach has, to date, been less helpful.
